Award Amount: $1,500 per semester

Information and Eligibility:
The American Indian Nurse Scholarship Program (formerly the American Indian Nurse Scholarship Award Program) supports students of American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian descent pursuing careers in nursing or health education. Applicants are expected to work in healthcare settings serving Native communities and remain in good academic standing throughout their education.

Eligibility criteria include:

• Tribal Affiliation: Must be enrolled in a federally recognized tribe or able to prove direct tribal ancestry.
• Academic Level: High school graduate (or equivalent) and enrolled in an accredited nursing program (associate, bachelor’s, or graduate level).
• Program Commitment: Must be enrolled in nursing or a related health-care/health-education program and expected to graduate within the standard timeframe (two years for associate, four years for bachelor).

Application Requirements:

• Completed application form specific to the program.
• Official or unofficial transcript from current institution.
• Biographical statement or personal statement including educational background, career goals and relevance to Native healthcare.
• Photo and recommendation from school official (counselor, teacher) may be required.

Selection Criteria:

• Academic achievement and ongoing good scholastic standing.
• Commitment to a career in nursing, health education, or healthcare benefiting Native communities.
• Financial need and eligibility (not receiving certain other Native health scholarships).

Additional Details:

• Once offered, the scholarship award of $1,500 per semester can be renewed each semester provided the student remains in good academic standing and continues in the approved program.
• A portion of the funds must be applied to tuition, books or fees applicable to the approved program and are credited through the recipient’s institution.
