Name: The American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Contest

Information And Eligibility: To help high school students gain a deeper understanding and better appreciation for the U.S. Constitution, The American Legion has hosted an academic speaking contest that teaches the history of our nation’s laws, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, and participants have the opportunity to earn some of the largest college scholarships available to high school students. High school students under the age 20 are eligible to enter the scholarship competition. Applicants must compose an eight to ten minute long speech on a topic related to the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Applicants will also be assigned a three to five minute long speech on an assigned topic as part of the competition. All applicants will start at the post level, with the winners advancing to a state competition. Legion department representatives will then select one winner per state to enter the national contest. The overall national contest winner will receive an $18,000 college scholarship, second place winner will receive a $16,000 college scholarship, and third place winner will receive a $14,000 college scholarship. Each winner at the state level will also receives a $1,500 scholarship.
