Information and Eligibility:
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship supports Ph.D. candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose dissertations address questions of religious understanding, ethics, or values. Applicants must be in the final stage of writing their dissertation and enrolled at an accredited U.S. institution.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Ph.D. candidates at accredited graduate schools in the United States.
  • Status: Applicants must have completed all coursework, passed preliminary examinations, and had their dissertation proposal approved before the application deadline.
  • Field of Study: Any field in the humanities or social sciences; work in science, technology, engineering, or math is eligible only if the dissertation centrally addresses ethics or religious values.
  • Writing Stage: Applicants must have begun writing the dissertation; fieldwork or research should be substantially complete and the final writing year imminent.
  • Previous Funding: Applicants must not have held a similar national award for the final year of dissertation writing.

Additional Details:

  • Fellows receive a stipend for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing; partial or half-year awards are not permitted.
  • The recipient’s institution is asked to waive tuition and fees for the fellowship year and maintain health insurance coverage.
  • The fellowship is administered jointly by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars (formerly the Woodrow Wilson Foundation) on behalf of the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation.
