Information and Eligibility:
The Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship is designed to increase the diversity of the U.S. academic faculty by supporting individuals pursuing research-based doctoral study (Ph.D. or Sc.D.) in eligible fields such as the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Recipients commit to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level and bring valuable perspectives to student learning and academic enrichment. Eligibility criteria include:

  • Citizenship/Residency: U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, permanent residents, DACA recipients, refugees or asylees, and U.S. Indigenous persons exercising rights under the Jay Treaty.
  • Academic Level: Applicants must be enrolled in—or have been admitted to—an eligible research doctoral program (Ph.D. or Sc.D.) at a U.S. accredited institution, no more than three years into the program at the time of application, with at least three years remaining.
  • Field of Study: Must be engaged in research rather than professional practice. Eligible fields include humanities, social sciences, natural/physical sciences, STEM and interdisciplinary areas that lead to academic careers. Professional degrees, terminal master’s programs, Ed.D., J.D./PhD, M.D./PhD, and non-research tracks are not eligible.
  • Academic & Career Commitment: Applicants must have demonstrated superior academic achievement, show promise as scholars/teachers and a clear commitment to using diversity to enhance student education and the academic environment.

Application Requirements:

  • Online application form via the Ford Fellowships portal.
  • Academic transcripts from all institutions attended, résumé or CV, essays outlining research objectives, teaching goals, and contribution to diversity, and letters of recommendation.
  • Proof of admission or enrollment in a doctoral program with at least three years remaining (for predoctoral category).

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic excellence as indicated by transcripts, honors, and promise for scholarly contribution.
  • Demonstrated capacity to enrich higher education through diverse perspectives, teaching, mentorship and research.
  • Clarity and feasibility of proposed doctoral study, alignment with academic career goals, and readiness to complete a dissertation.

Additional Details:

  • The program awards approximately 70 new predoctoral fellowships annually.
  • The Ford Fellowships program is administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on behalf of the Ford Foundation.
  • Ford has announced that the fellowship program will be phased out by 2028; new awards will continue through that timeframe and current recipients will be supported until their terms conclude.
