Name: The Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition
Award Amount:
Information And Eligibility:
The Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition, presented by the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society in Clarinda, Iowa, is one of the nation’s longest-running and most respected music scholarships for young performers. Designed to honor the musical legacy of famed bandleader Glenn Miller, the competition provides aspiring vocalists and instrumentalists with both financial assistance and invaluable performance experience. Scholarships are awarded in two separate categories — vocal and instrumental — with each category offering $1,000, $2,000, and $4,000 awards to the top performers. These scholarships may be used toward tuition, music program fees, private instruction, equipment, or other educational costs.
The competition is open to high school seniors preparing to enter college, as well as college freshmen who previously applied as high school seniors but did not receive an award. This ensures talented students have a second opportunity to compete as they transition into collegiate-level study. The Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition focuses on identifying well-rounded, musically dedicated students who demonstrate technical ability, musical expression, and a strong commitment to pursuing music academically or professionally.
Applicants begin by submitting a recorded audition, traditionally a CD but now commonly a digital file or online upload. Submissions should showcase tone quality, technique, interpretation, and musical potential. From the recorded auditions, a select group of semi-finalists in each category are invited to Clarinda, Iowa, to participate in a live performance round during the annual Glenn Miller Festival. Semi-finalists perform their selected repertoire before a panel of professional judges, who evaluate musicality, stage presence, and artistic interpretation.
A final round is held for top performers in each category, culminating in the selection of scholarship recipients. This multi-stage structure allows applicants to experience a realistic and rigorous audition environment similar to conservatory or professional auditions. It also provides valuable performance exposure in front of an enthusiastic audience of musicians, educators, and jazz enthusiasts.
