Name: Kim de Rubertis Student Scholarship – United States Society on Dams (USSD)

Award Amount: $5,000 – $10,000 per recipient

Information and Eligibility:
The Kim de Rubertis Student Scholarship, administered by the United States Society on Dams (USSD), supports undergraduate and graduate students whose academic research and plans address practical solutions to design, construction or safety challenges related to dams, levees and water-resources systems.
Eligibility criteria include:

  • Academic Level: Junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time in a U.S. program in civil engineering (or a closely related discipline) focused on dams, levees, water resources.
  • Research Focus: Applicant must submit a research proposal addressing technical challenges in dam/levee design, construction, monitoring or risk assessment.
  • Citizenship/Enrollment: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enrolled in a U.S.-accredited institution.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed online application form.
  • Research proposal that clearly defines problem, objectives, methodology and relevance to dams/levees/level water resources.
  • Résumé or CV outlining academic background, research experience and future career goals. (Often part of the submission materials.)
  • Letter of recommendation (typically from academic advisor or research mentor).

Selection Criteria:

  • Originality and significance of the research proposal in the field of dams, levees and water-resources infrastructure.
  • Feasibility of the proposed work and connection to practical engineering or infrastructure challenges.
  • Academic excellence and potential to contribute to the field of dam and levee engineering.

Additional Details:

  • Top finalists are invited to present their research proposal at the USSD Annual Conference; finalists also receive complimentary USSD membership and travel/registration support.
  • Award money is distributed in two parts: an initial payment after selection and a subsequent payment upon project progress or in the following year.
