NASA Space Grant

Name: National Space Grant College and Fellowship Project (NASA Space Grant)

Award Amount: Varies by state consortium

Information and Eligibility:
The National Space Grant College and Fellowship Project—commonly known as NASA Space Grant—is a nationwide program established in 1989 to promote education, research, and public engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), with a particular emphasis on aerospace and space-related fields. Funded by NASA and implemented through 52 state-based consortia, the program includes all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Each consortium partners with universities, community colleges, museums, science centers, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies to expand STEM opportunities for students and educators at all levels.

NASA Space Grant provides a wide variety of funding opportunities, including undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, research assistantships, faculty development grants, hands-on research experiences, internships, K–12 outreach programs, and public science engagement initiatives. Awards can range from small supplemental stipends to significant multi-year fellowships, depending on the state consortium and the applicant’s academic level. Because each consortium independently administers its own programs, eligibility requirements, award amounts, and deadlines vary.

Participating students often engage in NASA-aligned research, aerospace design, robotics competitions, atmospheric science, computer modeling, Earth science initiatives, and engineering projects that deepen their understanding of real-world STEM challenges. Many consortia also provide opportunities to work directly with NASA centers, industry partners, and university laboratories, making this a valuable launching point for careers in aerospace, engineering, physics, computer science, and related disciplines.

Eligibility Requirements (General):

  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll at a participating institution within your state’s Space Grant consortium.
  • Must be pursuing a degree in a STEM field such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, geology, atmospheric science, or aerospace-related studies.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen for most scholarship and fellowship programs (some outreach programs may allow noncitizens).
  • Must meet all eligibility criteria set by the individual consortium administering the award.

Application Requirements (Typical):

  • Complete an application through your state’s Space Grant consortium website or designated portal.
  • Submit academic transcripts demonstrating strong performance in STEM coursework.
  • Provide letters of recommendation from professors, mentors, or research supervisors.
  • Submit a personal statement or project proposal outlining academic goals, research interests, or intended NASA-aligned work.
  • Meet all additional requirements specific to the state consortium or program type.

Additional Details:

  • Each state consortium offers unique programs tailored to local academic institutions and industries.
  • Funding may support research, tuition, conference travel, outreach initiatives, or hands-on NASA-related projects.
  • Programs are highly competitive, with selection based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with NASA’s mission.
  • Students are encouraged to contact their state’s Space Grant coordinator for specific guidance.

Deadline:

  • Application Due: Varies by consortium
  • Award Announcement: Varies by consortium
