Information And Eligibility:
The National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest invites active 4-H Club members to submit essays on the topic of Varietal Honeys. The essay should address the following questions:

  • What makes a varietal honey?
  • What are some unique varietals?
  • How are valuable varietals confirmed to be authentic (e.g., Manuka honey UMF and MGO)?
  • What are some culturally or economically important varietals and why are they important?

An essential judging criterion is the scope of research, which accounts for 40% of the score. Participants should include diverse sources and properly document their research, including personal interviews with beekeepers or others familiar with the subject.

Eligibility:
This contest is open to active 4-H Club members only. Previous national winners (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) are not eligible to win again, but state competition winners are eligible. Essays must focus on the designated topic only, with no exceptions. Failure to follow the essay requirements will result in disqualification.

Essay Requirements:

  • Write on the designated subject only.
  • Provide a bibliography with all factual statements or interview references cited.
  • Include a brief biographical sketch of the essayist (name, date of birth, gender, complete mailing address, email address, telephone number, and 4-H club name and location) on a separate page.
  • Essay length: 750 to 1,000 words (not including bibliography or biographical statement).
  • Typed, double-spaced, in 12-pt Times New Roman or similar font, in standard manuscript format.
  • Submit essay as a Microsoft Word or PDF document. Files that cannot be opened by the judges will be disqualified.

  • Creativity – 10%
  • Conciseness – 10%
  • Logical Development of Topic – 10%
