Eligibility for the NJREA Scholarship for Minority Students in Education includes the following criteria:

  • Minority Status: The applicant must identify as a minority student (e.g., African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian American) and be able to provide documentation of their ethnic or racial background.
  • Intended Major: Applicants must be pursuing a degree in education with the goal of teaching in a New Jersey public school. The scholarship is open to students interested in any field of education, including elementary education, special education, and secondary education in various subjects.
  • Academic Achievement: A minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required. Applicants should have demonstrated strong academic performance throughout high school, particularly in subjects related to education or teaching.
  • Leadership and Community Service: Applicants should demonstrate leadership skills and active involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, or volunteer work, particularly in areas that relate to education or mentorship.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required. One letter must be from a high school teacher or counselor who can attest to the applicant’s academic abilities and potential as an educator, while the second should come from someone who can speak to the applicant’s community involvement or leadership qualities.
  • Essay: Applicants must submit an essay discussing their desire to become an educator, their commitment to serving in New Jersey’s public schools, and how they plan to contribute to diversity and equity in education.

This scholarship provides $2,500 to assist with tuition and other educational expenses. Although the scholarship is non-renewable, it serves as a critical resource for minority students who wish to enter the teaching profession and work toward improving educational outcomes for students from all backgrounds.
