Award Amount: $1,000 (three awards available)

Information and Eligibility:

The NSHSS Hometown Hero Scholarship is awarded by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) to honor students demonstrating outstanding leadership through community service. This scholarship is available to NSHSS members graduating high school.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Membership: Must be an NSHSS member.
  • Graduation Year: Open to students graduating high school.

Application Requirements

To apply for the NSHSS Hometown Hero Scholarship, applicants must submit the following materials:

  • Educator Recommendation: A letter from an educator endorsing the applicant’s qualifications.
  • Personal Essay: A 500-800 word essay responding to the prompt: “As a community leader, what specific need have you identified to improve the lives of those around you? Share the actions you’ve taken to address this need, the impact of your efforts, and how your leadership has made a difference. When you envision the future of your community as a result of your work, what lasting positive changes do you see?”
  • Optional Media: Pictures, videos, or other media showcasing the applicant’s leadership in action.
  • Headshot: A color photograph suitable for website posting.
  • Resume: An academic resume detailing relevant experiences and achievements.
  • Transcript: A current academic transcript (official or unofficial).

Applications open on May 1 and close on August 18 at 11:59 PM (EST).
