Award Amount:

  • Provides annual awards up to the amount of SUNY undergraduate tuition, currently $7,070 per year, for up to four years of full-time study.

Overview:

The NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Scholarship is designed to encourage students to pursue careers as secondary education (grades 7-12) mathematics and science teachers in New York State. In exchange for the scholarship, recipients agree to work for five years as math or science teachers in secondary schools within the state.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be a legal resident of New York State for at least 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term.
  • Be enrolled full-time in an approved undergraduate or graduate program at a degree-granting institution in New York State leading to a career as a secondary education math or science teacher.
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
  • Not be in default on any state or federal student loans or have any outstanding state or federal grant overpayments.
  • Execute a service contract agreeing to work as a secondary education math or science teacher in New York State for five years.

Application Process:

  • Complete and submit the NYS Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program Application, available on the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) website.
  • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application to determine eligibility for other financial aid programs.
  • Provide any additional documentation as requested by HESC to verify eligibility.

Service Agreement:

  • Recipients must agree to work full-time for five years as a math or science teacher in secondary education (grades 7-12) in New York State.
  • The service obligation must be fulfilled within seven years of completing the degree program for which the scholarship was awarded.
  • Failure to meet the service obligation will result in the conversion of the scholarship to a loan that must be repaid, plus interest.

  • The scholarship is renewable for up to four years of full-time undergraduate or graduate study, provided the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and continues to meet all eligibility requirements.
