The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Scholarship Competition

Name: Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Scholarship Competition

Award Amount:

  • 1st Place: $3,000
  • 2nd Place: $2,000
  • 3rd Place: $1,000

Information and Eligibility:
The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society (GMBS) Scholarship Competition honors the legacy of legendary bandleader Glenn Miller by offering a national music-performance scholarship to aspiring musicians. Since 1977, the Society has invited high school seniors and college freshmen who plan to major in music — or otherwise make music a central part of their future — to apply. Entrants may choose between two categories: vocalist or instrumentalist.

Applicants begin by submitting an audition recording (e.g. tape or CD; today often a digital upload), along with an application and a “statement of musical intentions.” From those submissions, 10 semi-finalists in each category (vocal and instrumental) are selected for live auditions at the annual festival in Clarinda, Iowa. Finalists perform a concert-quality piece (up to 5 minutes), sight-read judge-provided selections, and perform required technical exercises such as scales or arpeggios. Vocalists must perform unamplified, and instrumentalists must meet the competition’s technical standards.

There is no requirement of musical style: the competition is open to any field of applied music, classical or contemporary, jazz or other genres. The intent is not to find “look-alikes” or imitators of Glenn Miller — but rather to uplift promising young musical talent in any genre.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. high school senior or a college freshman at the time of application
  • Must plan to major in or make music a central part of future life or education
  • Must choose either the vocalist or instrumentalist category (not both)

Application Requirements:

  • Completed application form from GMBS
  • Submission of two audition tracks in contrasting styles via YouTube or equivalent (or prior-generation tape/CD, depending on cycle)
  • A short statement of musical intentions — why music matters to the applicant and their future aspirations

Selection Criteria:

  • Quality and musicality of the audition tape
  • Technical skill demonstrated in live auditions (performance piece, sight-reading, technical exercises) for finalists
  • Commitment to music as a life goal (as stated in the musical intentions)

Additional Details:

  • The competition awards a total of $12,000 each year across both categories (vocal and instrumental combined).
  • Finalists must travel to Clarinda, Iowa for live auditions — travel expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.
  • The award may be used for any educational-related expenses (tuition, fees, books, instrument costs, etc.) for recipients who plan to pursue a music major or otherwise continue music studies.
