Kate Herzog Scholarships

Name: Kate Herzog Memorial Award

Award Amount: $2,500

Information and Eligibility:
Willamette Writers and Barnes and Noble are the proud sponsor the Kate Herzog Scholarships. High school seniors and college freshman and sophomores can enter to win a Kate Herzog Scholarship. There are four scholarships with financial amounts to range from $100-$250. Applicants will submit an original, unpublished writing sample of less than 1000 words, typed, double-spaced. In previous years, student entries have ranged about one third fiction, one third essays, one third memoirs, and some poetry.

The Kate Herzog Memorial Award honors the legacy of Kate Herzog, a 2009 MBA graduate of the University of St. Thomas, who was an entrepreneur, mentor, and teacher. This award is part of the Fowler Business Concept Challenge and is designed to support aspiring social entrepreneurs dedicated to poverty alleviation, serving under-resourced communities, and closing opportunity gaps. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to social impact through innovative business solutions.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Competition Participation: Applicants must participate in the Fowler Business Concept Challenge, selecting the Social Venture Track and indicating interest in the Kate Herzog Memorial Award.
  • Concept Focus: The business concept should address social challenges related to poverty alleviation, serving under-resourced communities, or closing opportunity gaps.
  • Team Composition: Applicants may compete individually or as part of a team. Teams typically consist of two to three members, all of whom must be current students at the University of St. Thomas with a valid student ID.
  • Submission Requirements: A five-page business concept document outlining the social venture, including problem identification, proposed solution, target population, competitive advantage, social impact potential, and business model.
  • Presentation: Semifinalists will present their concepts in a 10-minute pitch during the semifinals, with the opportunity to advance to the finals for additional scholarships.

Deadline: The application deadline for the Fowler Business Concept Challenge is typically in October. Specific dates and submission links are announced each year. Please check the official University of St. Thomas website for the most current information.
